Finnish thinking · Moorebank beginnings
Creative thinking. Collaboration. Adaptability. Skills children can carry into everything they do.
Arkki uses architecture and design as a hands-on, real-world vehicle to bring STEAM subjects together — so children don't learn science, maths, technology, engineering and art in silos, but through projects they build with their own hands. Along the way they develop the “21st-century skills” employers and schools increasingly value: creative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and adaptability.
This isn't a program we bought off a shelf. Anthony Haddad, co-founder of Smart Steps, is a core member of Arkki Australia, and our centre has been shaped hand-in-hand with Arkki's team. It means the creative philosophy runs through everything we do — not as an add-on, but as the way we teach.
Finland is home to one of the most admired education systems in the world — and Arkki is one of its standout creative-education programs. Developed by the Arkki School of Architecture for Children and Youth over roughly three decades, it's certified by the Finnish National Agency for Education, carries the “Design from Finland” mark, and is delivered in 11 countries.
